Green Gal Beauty

By Myka

Organic foods, natural fibers for my clothing, home remedies for colds, cleaning products, the state of my hair….So it only makes sense that when it comes to beauty I am a fan of all things natural things as well. I try to limit my exposure to chemicals and since the skin is our largest organ, I avoid products that contain any ingredients that I cannot pronounce.

Most of these “miracle” products are nothing but chemical laden creams and while it might have a short term effect on our skin, it can have a long time effect on our bodies and our endocrine system. I’ve found that some of the people I know with the most beautiful skin, hair and nails are those that shun typical cosmetic products for natural home remedies.

Now let’s be real, I don’t have the time (or the desire) to make my own lotions, soaps or toothpaste. Besides, there are too many great products out there for me to waste my time trying to recreate them. However, there are some DIY treatments that are on constant rotation in my beauty routine. They are quick, easy to create and cost effective.

Two things that have a variety of uses and are always in my cabinets are Apple Cider Vinegar and Bentonite clay. My favorite beauty treatment with these in is an Apple Cider Vinegar Mask – I use it about twice a week and it really works with consistent use to detox my skin and exfoliate.

Vinegar is antiseptic and prevents the development of bacteria, viruses, or yeast that can trigger infection. Read: Acne. It regulates the pH of the skin while promoting circulation and can dissolve excessive fatty deposits at the surface of the skin as well as reduce scaly or peeling conditions. It contains Malic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid and assists in the exfoliation of the skin. This great little vinegar can be used to treat everything from dandruff to diabetes to high cholesterol. I enjoy making a “cocktail” of sparkling water, apple cider vinegar and lemon that I sip to help detox and alkalinize my body. I also use it when I start to feel a cold coming on, just a few sips in the morning make a world of difference!

Bentonite clay uses a negative ionic charge to capture and absorb toxins. Since many of the toxins in our body are positively charged toxins are attracted to and bonded to the clay, making it all that more effective for elimination. It can be used internally and externally as well. If using internally make sure the clay is safe for internal use and doesn’t have any added metals.

Apple Cider Vinegar Face Mask:

1. Mix equal parts bentonite clay with apple cider vinegar to form a paste. Make sure to use organic apple cider vinegar. I use Bragg’s and Aztec Indian Healing Clay. DO NOT USE METAL UTENSILS.

2. Apply to clean skin

3. Leave for 15-20 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water

4. Apply moisturizer
