The absolute highlight of the week. Sandy and sun-kissed golden curls for legendary artist Calida Garcia Rawles, an esteemed member of this year’s host committee for Frieze LA.
This was my second time working with Calida on her overall look, and we decided to go with this electric blue DVF sequined wrap dress from my collection, in honor of our alma mater, Spelman College.
Calida’s latest work, ‘Thy Name We Praise’, is the latest addition to the traveling exhibition “Black American Portraits,” debuted first here in LA at LACMA in 2021, and now currently on view through June 30, 2023 at Spelman College's Museum of Fine Art in Atlanta. As stated by Cultured Mag, “the group exhibition reframes the style of portraiture of Black women artists
,” and “the work’s title is borrowed from “The Spelman Hymn,” which was adopted by the school in 1934. It serves as a wish for peace and protection for Spelmanites.”
Attending Spelman College is a truly life changing experience. Whether near or far, the sisterhood always endures. We couldn’t be prouder of Calida’s well earned success and meteoric rise in the art world. She is Black History. She is American History.
