ANNUAL TRADITIONS

By Kadi

A little fun 4th fact. For many years (before kids, businesses and other adult responsibilities), Myka and I always took an annual best friend’s trip to a different place in America to celebrate the Fourth of July. Since we lived in different cities, and sometimes different countries, it was always a nice way to officially kick off the summer season together and see the country at the same time.

These photos are from a trip over a decade ago to Newport, Rhode Island. I had a “friend” who lived there who I thought could serve as a local contact, but when we got there, her friends suffered from mean girl clique syndrome and ditched us, so we met other new friends at a restaurant who welcomed us with open arms and literally hung with us for the rest of the trip!

I’ll never forget that trip because of the disparate attitudes of the two groups. One of there’s no room here for newcomers, and the other of, you are welcome here - the more the merrier. My, how the years have passed, yet things still remain the same. On this holiday, let’s remember to be kind and welcoming above all. Can’t think of anything more American than that. Happy Fourth of July.
