Reflecting on Summer, Looking Forward to Fall

10.01.12

Summertime represents an opportunity for us to break away from the everyday grind of our respective routines and take advantage of the multiple holiday weekends. The season was kicked off with Memorial Day jaunts to Hawaii and the Connecticut coast, continuing with a sweltering Palm Springs Fourth of July, and concluding Labor Day with a nostalgic weekend in the gorgeous city of Atlanta, where Southern hospitality and quality time with family and friends reigned. The highlight, sandwiched in between, was a joint birthday celebration, enjoyed al fresco with our dearest friends at Cecconi’s in West Hollywood.

A huge thank you to Ian Duncan for his amazing photography.

The Golden State

10.01.12

I love when I stumble upon a cool local store with a lovely staff. That was my experience at The Golden State. What led me there was an email received from a friend about a tag sale being held in Golden State’s front yard. Since nothing is better than a flea market on a Sunday, and this was in my ‘hood instead of trekking to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl, I hopped in my jeep to check it out. First of all, any store with “a front yard” has already won me over. From the outset I was surrounded outside by laid back California furnishings, vintage decorating books, and cool artwork. It was enough to lure me into the actual store, and once inside I discovered a treasure trove of authentic California artisan gear, including slouchy tees, hand studded guitar straps, perfectly faded and washed denim, and handmade furnishings for the home. As a bonus, owner Stephanie Addis (a former fashion stylist) and her awesome employee are among the nicest people I’ve met. I was feeling a bit sluggish that morning after one too many margaritas the night before and wasn’t particularly chatty at first, but these ladies were engaging and easy, and an hour later I had set my purse down, taken off my sunglasses, and was discovering something cool in every corner of the store. I left with a four foot tall picture of girls in roller skates I found outside at the tag sale (random, I know, but I had to), and an amazing rose print covered notebook with hand bound pages by Paisley Label by Kerry Cassill for journaling. This store has immediately made the top of my list for holiday shopping. Not bad for a new neighborhood find.

A New Way To Partake

09.28.12

But that was in my twenties. Now that I am older (and vaporizers have been invented) there really hasn’t been the need to light up. Until I found these babies from Jonathan Adler. I’ve been burning them for about 6 years now and every time I light one, people immediately want to know what it is. Including my mother who would NEVER spend $68 on a candle but has. And does. It’s my homes signature scent. We can’t keep them on the shelf at WAX – and at $68 it’s a pricey candle, but the upside is that when the candle is spent you are left with an amazingly awesome ceramic canister that’s perfect for storing cotton balls, q-tips, hair bands, bobby pins…or….

Bright Lips

09.28.12

For years my cousin and I embraced the neutral lipgloss trend in college. And for years we had to hear the question “Aren’t you going to put on lipstick?” and reply “I’ve already got it on.” while receiving blank stares from our grandmothers and their sisters. They couldn’t understand the point of having on lipstick that you couldn’t see. Now that I’m older (why do I keep saying that on this blog??) I’ve come to appreciate the effect of a strong lip and a proper lipstick. It wakes you up. It makes a statement. But not only that, it says, I give a shit about how I look and I don’t care that I will have to reapply 6 times today. I will get up after lunch and take 5 minutes to make sure my lipstick is on, my skirt is straight, there is no residual food in my teeth and I can face the afternoon with confidence. You see, Kadi and I have been on this kick for a while. No one is more excited that us when NARS launches a new color. We are utterly and totally devoted to NARS for our lip colors. The colors are great because we can both wear them! Some of our all times faves are SchiapFunny FaceHeat Wave and most recently Dragon Girl & Red Square which are matte lipstick crayons. Genius!

So if you think you can’t wear bright lipstick, think again. Go to the NARS counter, ask for the brightest orange or pink or red you see and give it a go. You might decide that your Grandmother knew something after all…..
